Can’t resist that tanned look but want to do it safely? If you’re trying to achieve a bronzed glow at home without the sun’s harmful UV rays (bravo!), self-tanner is your BFF – all year round. However, not every self-tanner is a good choice, especially if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin.
For the face especially, using a good quality tanner is essential if you want to avoid breaking out – or looking like a Cheeto! To get your glow on without compromising a clear complexion, read on to discover the best face self-tanner for acne-prone skin – and sensitivity too.
But First…What is DHA?
Before we get to face tanning, here’s a quick recap on the magic ingredient that enables your fave bronzing mousse, cream or drops to deliver your golden glow – DHA. DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, which is the active ingredient used in most self-tanning products. This simple carbohydrate formula reacts with amino acids in your skin, producing a darkening effect.
Studies have shown DHA doesn’t cause harm to your skin, only affecting the outermost cells of the epidermis. And in the Sunny Honey tanning range, we only use 100% natural DHA – versus the synthetic options that are commonly used.
While DHA gets to work immediately, your fake tan will often take 18-24 hours to fully develop. Then, depending on your skincare habits and skin type, a tan can last up to a week.

Bali Bronzing Foam
If you’re prone to body breakouts, you also need to pick your tanner carefully. Luckily you won’t have to look for long, as our Bali Bronzing Foam is an excellent non-comedogenic option that won’t cause pore congestion. In medium, dark or ultra-dark, it quickly delivers a gorgeous, sun-kissed glow with no orange tones. While also blurring pigmentation and perfecting your skin with CellushapeTM technology.
Lightweight and fast-drying, the formula contains 100% natural DHA and is toxin-free and vegan, too. Hydrating skin with raw virgin coconut, the fast-acting foam leaves you smelling like a ripe tropical mango with a hint of guava. Rather than stinking of that biscuity fake tan smell.
How to Use Self-Tanner on Your Face
Using a self-tanner is easy, just follow these quick steps:
- When applying self-tanner to the face (or bod), ensure your skin is clean and free from moisturisers. You should also exfoliate 24 hours before to create a smooth canvas for an even, patch-free glow.
- For the face, gradual tanning drops are a foolproof way to create a buildable, custom glow, while taking care of your complexion. (No drops? You could use a tanning mousse with hydrating ingredients, applied with a self-tanning brush to get into all your facial contours.)
- Mix 2-3 tanning drops into your moisturiser then apply to your face and neck, blending at the hairline. We recommend doing this at night so you can avoid applying makeup etc on top while the tan is still developing. Your glow will start appearing from 2 hours on, but it will take around 8-12 hours for your final colour to appear.
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
-
Top up your self-tan as needed every few days. And make sure you moisturise daily to maintain results!
And for a bronzed bod? Here’s how to apply self-tanner (the right way).
